The St. James Tiger varsity wrestling team just keeps piling on the wins this season.
Last weekend, the Tiger varsity wrestlers traveled to Moberly for the Moberly Duals Tournament, and came home with a 6-2 record at the competition.
Friday, The Tigers competed in three dual matches, winning two and losing one by a single point.
Saturday, the Tiger wrestling team competed in five more duals, winning four of them and losing one. At the conclusion of the tournament, the Tigers’ win/loss season record stood at 18-6 going into the Christmas vacation.
Coach Marty Hauck said he was proud of his team’s performance at the Moberly Duals Tournament. “This is the best showing the Tiger wrestlers have ever had at the Moberly Tournament,” he said. “Prior to this year, the best the team had ever done was 4-4, and we are very happy with the 6-2 outcome.”
Hauck said the best dual of the tournament was against Afton. The team set a high score, losing only one match, but winning 11 by pin.
Hauck said there were a few wrestlers he was specifically impressed with.
He said freshman Danny McCarthy wrestled two state ranked opponents. While McCarthy lost both of the matches, Hauck said McCarthy still did a good job during the contests, and held his own on the matt. Caleb Martenson, who just became eligible to wrestle, and was wrestling for the first time, only lost one match. He went 7-1 in the tourney.
Hauck said that the efforts of the heavyweight wrestlers (Kevin Jernigan, Jake Gleason, Ryan Pope and Jake Karnes) helped keep STJ in the running in some of the team’s closer duals.
“The boys really have stepped up,” Hauck said.
The experienced seniors on the team (Payton Woolsey, Nick DeClue, Jason Walls and Zach Pitts) continue to win matches when it counts and are showing strong leadership, Hauck said.
Jason Walls earned his 100th career win during the tournament dual against Warrenton, to become the third Tiger wrestler to earn his 100th win this season, joining Payton Woolsey and Nick DeClue with the honor.
The Tigers do not compete again until Jan. 5, when they travel to Fatima to compete in a triangle dual against Fatima and New Bloomfield.
