After busy first week of season, St. James falls to Salem on Monday

The St. James High School softball team fell to 1-6 in varsity competition by losing to Salem 11-9 Monday at Nelson Hart Park.

The game had been scheduled to be held at Salem but due to field conditions was moved to Nelson Hart Park. Salem was the home team.

Most of the scoring came in the first three innings.

Salem erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and got two runs in the third. St. James got a run in the second inning and tied the game at 9-9 with an eight-run third inning.

However, Salem took the lead for good with a single run in the fourth inning and another run in the sixth.

Salem outhit St. James 8-4.

Kaycee Orlando and Caitlin Donnelly each had a hit, run and RBI for the St. James Lady Tigers while Shantel Howard scored three times; Kaylee Yowell had a run and RBI; Tory Scott doubled; Ashley Steen had a hit, and Renee Recker and Amie Diestelkamp each scored a run.

Steen was the losing pitcher.

Salem also won the junior varsity game 5-1.

St. James is scheduled to play again Friday, hosting Belle at Nelson Hart Park, starting at 4:30 p.m.
