After a final hearing on a proposal to vacate a portion of a county road located south of St. James, the Phelps County Commission approved the measure Thursday, contingent upon finding acceptable sites for turnarounds.

A petition, led by property owners Scott and Beth Dickerhoff and signed by several residents on County Road 3330, precipitated the Commission’s approval of the measure that will terminate county maintenance on a section of the road near “Deans Ford.”

No objections to the sectional road vacation were raised during the final hearing.

With the county’s vacation of the small portion of CR 3330, the Dickerhoff’s will dedicate, or deed, to the county two sections of the road located north and south of Deans Ford. The new dead-ended sections, both north and south of Deans Ford, will be reconfigured to include 100-foot-wide cul-de-sacs, “contingent” upon final approval of turnaround locations and surveys.

Although the Commission appeared comfortable with the location of the north-end cul-de-sac, it remained unclear as to the exact location of the south-side cul-de-sac; therefore, it asked the attending representative of the Dickerhoff’s, Robert E. Meyers, to arrange a meeting at the site with Road Supervisor Walter Snelson to determine the exact locations.

The Commission also asked Meyers to provide accurate surveys of the area.
