A smoke detector saved five lives during a house fire in St. James on Thursday morning.

Rosemary Hawkins and four of her six children awoke after hearing a smoke detector ringing in their home at 400 Holly Lane.

The Hawkins’ house was completely destroyed by fire, but all family members escaped without  injuries. Hawkins’ husband, Terry, and two of the couple’s children, were not home at the time.
The St. James Fire Protection District received the call for the blaze at 6:51 a.m.

Fire Chief Bruce Parton said the fire began in the flue pipe of a wood-burning stove in the basement.

Parton explained four individuals were sleeping on the main floor, and one child was sleeping downstairs in the finished basement. The fire moved up the basement stairs and the child escaped through an exterior basement door.

Firefighters gained control of the fire by 8:42 a.m. and remained at the site until 11 a.m., Parton said.

St. James Fire Department responded with five vehicles. The Rolla Rural Fire Department, St. James Police Department, St. James Street Department, St. James Ambulance District and Intercounty Electric also responded to the call. Vichy Fire Department was on stand-by for St. James, Parton said.

The St. James Fire Department also pulled a 250-gallon propane tank away from the burning structure, Parton noted.

He estimated the cost of the four-year-old home and content at $250,000. The home was insured by Rhea Insurance and vehicles were insured by State Auto Insurance.
