The Gardeners of the Forest City met at the home of Margaret Wilson on Friday, April 11 for a lovely noon luncheon co-hosted by Donna Grosvenor.
The main topic of the business meeting was the upcoming Plant and Bulb sale, which will be held at the old Train Depot on the Downtown Plaza on Friday, May 16th from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm and Saturday, May 17th from 8:00 am until noon. The community is encouraged to shop both days of this very popular annual fund-raiser for the club at its new location on the Plaza.
Thirteen members and three guests were in attendance for a marvelous program presented by Kathy Walker on a Fall Gardening Calendar. Highlighting the months of August through October, Kathy outlined a schedule for the many gardening activities needed to guarantee a successful return to the garden in the spring. Sand-casting leaf molds to use as birdbaths and making gardening containers from Styrofoam were other interesting features of her fascinating program. She also provided a list of handy local and national references for these and other gardening projects.
Members were reminded of a Plaza Bed workday on Monday, April 21st, with lunch to follow, and the first Yard Judging of the year, which is scheduled for April 28th. Ruth Walker encouraged members to buy tickets for the Beautify St. James Garden Tour to be held on Sunday, June 1st, and President Marge Huffman reported on rain related delays on the President's Project, which will be a Missouri wild flower garden along the community bike/walking path behind the MRPC building. She also reported the club's participation in the James Memorial Library summer reading program entitled “Catch the Reading Bug,” and stressed the importance of doing our part with beneficial plantings to encourage bee pollination.
The next meeting will be held at the home of Jean Crafton, with Ruth Walker co-hosting. Anyone wishing for more information, or to join the Gardeners of the Forest City, is encouraged to contact President Marge Huffman at 265-7261.
