Area road work this week

The Missouri Department of Transportation announced its general highway maintenance and construction work for the week. Weather conditions may cause postponements in the work schedule. Other construction or maintenance work may occur on other roadways throughout the area. Many projects will include lane closures, and delays can be expected. MoDOT reminds the public to buckle up, slow down, follow posted signing and drive safely through work areas.

HeeHaw show set for Feb. 17-18

Locals will soon be graced with a HeeHaw show at the St. James VFW Hall. The purpose of the HeeHaw show will be to raise funds for the playground project at Nelson Hart Park.

Smith to lead committee with judiciary review

State Rep. Jason Smith, R-Salem, will lead a group of his colleagues as they take a close look at Missouri’s judiciary with a focus on ensuring accountability and transparency within the system. Smith was named chairman of the House Special Standing Committee on Judicial Reform by House Speaker Steven Tilley, R-Perryville. Tilley said he has asked Smith and the members of the committee to take a comprehensive approach to examining the state’s judicial system to determine if any changes should be made by the Missouri General Assembly.

First Church of God Sunday schedule

Beginning this Sunday, Feb. 5, the First Church of God will have a new Sunday morning service schedule.

Coffee shop brings culture to St. James youth

The Firehouse Coffee Shop held a Theatre Arts event — one of many more to come — Friday. Students and parents filled the warm, painted coffee shop — some to play pool and others to listen and watch free entertainment — while they sipped lattes, shakes, or smoothies and enjoyed snacks hot off the grill.

Living legend

A driving force behind making the Grape & Fall Festival, as well as St. James as a whole what it is today was honored Friday night at Matt’s Steakhouse with the St. James Chamber of Commerce’s annual Lifetime Achievement Award.

Citizen of the Year award

A St. James resident described by STJ Chamber of Commerce members as an “unsung hero” was honored at a Chamber awards dinner Friday night at Matt’s Steakhouse as St. James’ Citizen of the Year.

MRCF taking applications for community grants

The Meramec Regional Community Foundation (MRCF) has initiated its community grantmaking program, which is open to programs and organizations in the Meramec Region counties of Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Osage, Phelps, Pulaski and Washington. Grant requests for 2012 are due by 5 p.m. Feb. 29.

Shelter Insurance Foundation Scholarship

This spring, the Shelter Insurance Foundation will award a $2000 scholarship to a graduate of John F. Hodge High School. Shelter Agent Terri DeLuca sponsors and partially funds this scholarship.

‘Big, big mess’ with Missouri Senate redistricting

After the smoke cleared and redistricting for the Missouri Senate was finished by a nonpartisan commission of judges appointed in late 2011 by Gov. Jay Nixon, State Sen. Dan Brown, R-Rolla, was supposed to represent Phelps, Laclede, Camden and Pulaski counties.

Local winery CEO to moderate conference

St. James Winery CEO Peter Hofherr has been invited to serve as a panel moderator at “The Many Faces of Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food,” an agricultural conference to be held at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago on Jan. 30.
