The St. James Sanitation Department works through the year to keep the city clean and its recycling program running smoothly.
Sanitation Supervisor Terry Gibson noted some of the accomplishments and goals of the department.
“We got a new building by Hi-Striker in the Industrial Park about two years ago. We have trucks, dumpsters and all the equipment we need stored there. We will probably get six new dumpsters for the schools and businesses this year. The six-yard dumpsters cost about $1,500 a piece.”
Beautify St. James recently assisted the sanitation department by purchasing $3,100 of trash can lids. The city paid $2,580 to help match the cost of the 26 lids. Gibson said the lids would greatly help the department by keeping the rainwater out of trash bags downtown.
Gibson noted the sanitation budget and equipment.
“For the budget we do go through a lot of tires for the upkeep on trucks. We would also need a new recycling truck in the near future. We have two trash trucks and one cardboard truck.”
The sanitation schedule is as follows: Monday is Ward 1, Tuesday is Ward 2, Thursday is Ward 3 and Friday is Ward 4. Dumpsters are on Wednesday and maintenance and cleanup occurs every day.
Gibson noted some tips for residents to help the sanitation department with recycling.
“They can put out the recycling the same day as their trash and try to put it opposite of the driveway. Put all the plastics in one container, aluminum in one, cardboard in one, glass in one and newspapers in one. We take it to the Rolla recycling center once a week.
“The recycling is for the city only and has been going since 1995 when we got the truck and the trailers. We don't make a dime off this; it keeps it out of the landfill.”
If a person is caught dumping trash inside the city limits from outside the city limits, there is a $500 fine and up to 90 days of jail time, Gibson noted.
“We have had people do illegal dumping so we are going to get more cameras to help stop it.”
Gibson said he has been working with the sanitation department for 15 years and the department has six employees.
