St. James citizens and people traveling along Highway 68 in downtown St. James got a little more than they bargained for Friday afternoon.

Lines from a pole near the old St. James City Hall were drug down, and until St. James Municipal Utilities officials came to examine the situation, pedestrians were left to wonder if the lines in question were power lines.

“There were no witnesses, but we know it had to be a larger vehicle. It was speculated that a trailer house being transported was the cause," City Codes Administrator Mark Davis said.

Mayor Dennis Wilson said that on top of the line being drug to the ground and damaging the old City Hall roof in the process, a telephone pole was also broken as a result of the incident.

The line was owned by Charter Communications and was not electrical in nature. The telephone pole was owned by Centrytel. Officials on the scene said the pole would need to be replaced.

Charter workers were repairing the downed line soon after the incident.
