The director of the Missouri Department of Transportation, Kevin Keith, today was elected president of the Mid America Association of State Transportation Officials.

The association is a division of AASHTO, the American Association of State Transportation Officials, and consists of 10 states primarily in the Midwest – Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin.

The organization works to represent and serve the transportation needs of the 10 member states.

"This is a great opportunity,” Keith said.  “I’m excited and honored to lead this organization in efforts to improve our national transportation system."

Keith became director of MoDOT in November 2010, after having served as the department’s interim director for about a year. His career with MoDOT spans more than 25 years.

He has served as the department’s chief engineer, transportation planning director and district engineer for MoDOT’s Northwest District, among other positions.

Keith is nationally recognized for his innovative efforts implementing “Practical Design” a no-frills approach to delivering projects while saving money to put toward more transportation improvements.

Keith has a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Missouri-Columbia.  He is a registered professional engineer and a member of the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers.
