If there's a serious vehicle crash or incident on a state roadway in Central Missouri, it's a guarantee that Chris Engelbrecht knows about it or is on the scene soon after it happens.
Chris is the safety and health manager for the Missouri Department of Transportation's Central Missouri District, a position he has held for 15 years. Incident response is just one of his many job duties, and it requires him to be on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. He handles calls from law enforcement every day, providing support whenever needed.
His dedication and capabilities have earned him recognition from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, who nominated him for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's "People Saving People" public safety award.
"Chris has earned this recognition by the law enforcement community for his overwhelming support and outstanding reputation," said Lt. Larry Plunkett, a Missouri Highway Patrol representtaive from Troop F. "He is consistent, reliable, and an invaluable resource to officers in the area. We consider him part of our team."
Very few civilians receive the People Saving People award, which highlights the impact Chris has for motorists on Missouri highways. When he's called to a scene, he assesses the situation not only for the safety of those involved with the crash, but also with motorists who may be on the highway at the time of the incident.
"While the Highway Patrol is responsible for managing the incident, MoDOT must be on hand to protect emergency response personnel and prevent secondary crashes," said Engelbrecht. "I am there to determine what impact the incident has on the roadway and those who are travelling on it."
As the go-to person at MoDOT for emergency response in Central Missouri, Chris not only helps law enforcement, but is a critical resource for MoDOT employees as well. He makes sure everyone involved can respond to incidents and manage them as safely as possible.
"When it comes to incident response, Chris is the most dedicated employee for MoDOT," said MoDOT Maintenance Superintendent Mike Belt. "His fantastic attitude about service makes a real difference to Missouri drivers, and the maintenance employees look to him when we have safety-related questions."
Chris accepted his award at the annual Law Enforcement Traffic Safety Advisory Council (LETSAC) conference on July 14, 2011.
