Melvin W. Laney passed away on Friday, June 20, 2008 at his home in St. James, Missouri, at the age of 84. Melvin was born October 5, 1923, in Stickney, Missouri, to the late Leslie and Lillie Laney.
Melvin honorably served his country as an Army Air Forces Flight Engineer aboard C-46 aircraft in the CBI Theater of Operations in WW II. He later worked as a mechanic at the Rolla National Airport in Vichy and became a well-known and respected self-employed welder and small engine mechanic in the local area. Melvin loved to target practice, play music and spend time with his family and friends. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Melvin was united in marriage to Nadine R. Christiansen on June 10, 1944. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 64 years, Nadine R. Laney of St. James and one sister, Rosa Pieper, Webster Groves, Missouri. He is also survived by four children as follows: Janet and Bill Colgrove, Vichy; Brenda and Norman Warren, St. James; Kerry Laney, St. James; and Merlin and Connie Laney, Sullivan. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and their families as follows: Charles “Cat” Spencer Jr., Elisabeth Conner, Will Spencer, Lynette Manley, Jill Miloro, Randi Wools, Courtney Laney, and Jill Nuzzo. Also, surviving are 17 great-grandchildren and one expected great-great grandchild. Melvin is also survived by several cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
In addition to his parents, Melvin was preceded in death by his infant brother, Richard Laney.
Visitation will be at the James & Gahr Mortuary, St. James on Monday, June 23, 2008 from 5 - 7 p.m. with services to be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 24, 2008 with interment to follow at the Rolla Cemetery.
