Spring cleaning is about to get easier, especially if you are thinking about tidying up around the yard and house. Opportunities to discard unwanted household items, left-over garage sale items, yard debris, and hazardous waste are available to area residents the week of April 21-26.
The St. James Sanitation Department and the St. James Street Department will be accepting items during the regular pickup days that week, and assisting with the City-Wide Cleanup sponsored by Beautify St. James on Saturday April 26. Items to be accepted by the Sanitation Department will be listed in the April 16th edition of the Leader-Journal. Pickup of major items, appliances, furniture and yard waste after this special clean-up week will be done, but for an additional charge.
On Saturday, April 12, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, you will be able to recycle your old computers, appliances and tires. Brewer Science, in association with the Meramec Regional Planning Commission will accept, free of charge, stoves, refrigerators, washers, dryers, microwaves, and other appliances. They will also accept computer monitors, CPUs, keyboards, printers, VCRs, cell phones and other electronics.
Also being accepted, for a slight charge, are TVs ($10 each) and car tires ($1.50), truck tires ($5.00) and tractor tires ($10.00). The Recycle Point will be the Brewer Science parking lot at 2401 Brewer Drive, located in the Hypoint Industrial Park at the I-44 & Highway "V" interchange.
In addition to the two opportunities to dispose of or recycle the items listed above, household hazardous waste can be dropped off at the Rolla Recycling Center on Old St. James Road at any time by appointment. Although an appointment is needed (573-364-6693), this service is free.
Items accepted include used oil, antifreeze, batteries, and toxic, poisonous or flammable chemicals. The hazardous waste collection is a service provided by the Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District, the Phelps County Landfill Board, Brewer Science, the city of Rolla and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
