The Yard Judging committee of the Gardener's of the Forest City met, toured the town, and selected the home of Nathaniel and Michelle Mitchell, located at 317 Scioto, as the Yard of the Month for May. Their showy phlox and refreshingly simple and yet beautiful plantings and yard have created a lovely curbside appeal and dressed up their older yard and neighborhood.
Don and Lynda Moore's home on 15 Katherine Drive was selected as second place for it's beautiful extended landscape and yard. The committee awarded third place to Scott and Gail Rust for their charming yard and gardens on 309 W. Hardy.
Both the Moores and the Rusts have been recognized for their yards by the club in the past, and have maintained consistently fine yards throughout the years.
The Mitchells are first time winners, being selected for drastically improving their older yard and neighborhood. They have owned their home for about four years and have made improvements little by little. Starting from nothing in the front, moving an unsightly ramp and driveway, planting trees and flowers, and last year trimming and shaping their yard and landscape into a plan which will include future plantings. Mr. Mitchell credits his wife and daughters with most of the garden design and work, and all are proud to have been recognized for their considerable efforts.
Criteria used by the committee are a clean, uncluttered, and neatly mowed lawn and plantings and flower garden design with limited, tasteful yard art and with no artificial plants or flowers.
Nominations are welcomed by the Gardeners, since it is difficult for the committee to view every lawn in the city every month. If you want a particular lawn to be considered, please contact Judi Raymond at 265-8781 or Marge Huffman at 265-7261.
