NEWBURG – A big fourth quarter allowed the Newburg High School girls’ basketball team to come from behind and post a 71-58 Frisco League victory over Richland on Tuesday.
OWENSVILLE – The Newburg High School boys’ basketball team staged a second-half rally to beat Owensville 38-34 in non-conference play on Monday.
All school, state and national single-game scoring records were safe at the Rolla High School gym Tuesday night.
In a Ozark Conference battle, both the Rolla and Lebanon high school boys’ basketball teams struggled putting the ball in the basket on Tuesday.
However, the host Bulldogs turned up the defensive intensity to help make mini-runs in the second and third periods hold up, posting a 46-34 victory over the Lebanon Yellow Jackets.
The St. James Middle School seventh-grade boys’ basketball team improved its record to 12-1 by beating Owensville 33-23 last Thursday.
Justin Marcee had 10 points and six rebounds for the Tigers while Joe Christisen added seven points, 11 rebounds and three steals and John Walters seven points, eight steals and four rebounds.
On Jan. 17 at home St. James whipped Sullivan 48-33. John Walters had 12 points, four rebounds, six steals and eight assists for St. James while Tyler Davis had 11 points and three rebounds, Marcee 10 points and three rebounds and Christisen eight points and nine boards.
Mark Miller played on one of the best teams in the history of Rolla High School boys’ basketball, his senior campaign of 1979-80.
And those 1980 Bulldogs couldn’t do it.
In fact, only three previous RHS squads in program history could do it.
In a battle of state-ranked teams, the St. James High School girls’ basketball squad was beaten by Republic 62-43 in non-conference action Monday.
Republic is ranked No. 1 in the latest Missouri Basketball Coaches Association’s Class 4 state poll while St. James is ranked No. 3 in the most recent Class 3 poll. Republic improves to 14-3 overall while St. James dropped its third straight game and is now 11-5.
After losing last Wednesday afternoon to tournament hosts Park Hills Central by one point, third place was the best the Lady Tigers could hope to accomplish in the annual Bob Sechrest Jr Central Christmas Tournament. Meeting the Potosi Lady Trojans on the court the Lady Tigers did indeed make up for the loss and beat Potosi by seven points 54-47. The win Friday evening improves the Lady Tigers season record to 9- 2.
The St. James High School boys’ basketball team evened its Four Rivers Conference record on Friday, belting the Union Wildcats 53-33 last Friday.
The St. James High School girls’ basketball team broke for the holidays with a non-conference victory on last Saturday afternoon, as the Lady Tigers defeated Jefferson City Helias 45-35.

While General Motor’s recently came out with its Chevrolet Volt, four electrical engineering students at Missouri University of Science and Technology just completed their own vehicle, a hybrid go-kart.
St. James' seventh grade team beat Bourbon during an away game Friday.
Two members of the St. James High School football team have been selected to the 2011 Missouri Sportswriters/Sportscasters Class 3 All-State Team, it was announced Friday, Dec. 9.
Tiger players selected to the all-state squad included senior wide receiver Justin Lineback and senior defensive back Jake Harlan.

The St. James Middle School seventh-grade boys’ basketball team whipped Steelville 40-15 on Monday. More game stats will be in the next print edition of the Leader-Journal.
The St. James Tiger varsity basketball team defeated Stoutland 71-61 in their season opener
at home last night.
The high school boys' basketball home game tomorrow night, Tuesday, Nov. 22, will be a varsity game only against Stoutland starting at 6 p.m.
According to Activities Director Phil West, this is due to Stoutland losing several players for various reasons. There will be no JV game played against Stoutland.
MissourI S&T junior defender Spencer Brinkmeyer was named Tuesday to the Daktronics All-Midwest region squad for the 2011 season, marking the second straight year he has been an all-region selection.
