The first fish at Maramec Spring Park during the 2010 Missouri trout season was turned in by one of the youngest anglers who was lining the stream.

Kyra Goodwin, a 5-year-old from Marissa, Ill. -- with a little help from dad -- ran in the first fish of the season to the check station just two minutes after the 6:30 a.m. opening siren at Maramec Spring Monday.

Kyra caught the trout and her father, Riley, helped her run the catch to the check station.
Goodwin’s catch was one of many at Maramec Spring Monday.

It was far from a record crowd, as Monday openers usually have lower totals. But with the weather cooperating a total of 1,261 adult anglers and 97 youths bought tags at Maramec as of 4 p.m. Monday.

Cody Alexander of Cuba, in the youth division, landed the largest lunker at Maramec, as he hauled in a six-pounder.

Other trout openers around the state on Monday were held at Montauk State Park, near Salem; Bennet Springs State Park, near Lebanon, and Roaring River State Park, near Cassville.

At Montauk State Park a total of 1,876 adults and 166 youth bought trout tags. As of 4 p.m. the largest lunker at Montauk was an eight-pound, 14-ounce fish by Jim Lawing, of St. Charles.

At Bennett Springs, there were 1,819 adults and 124 youth tags sold by 4 p.m. And at Roaring River a total of 1,652 adult tags and 341 youths were sold.

The St. James Chamber of Commerce handed out free doughnuts and coffee during the morning.

The Chamber also gave out several prizes for contest winners.
